Lettuce in the scientific name “Lactuca sativa” and Indian or Bengali name lettuce pata is a yearly small plant of the daisy relatives Asteraceae group. In the China it is called “Woju yey (莴苣叶)” or asparagus lettuce. Lettuce is a Herbal Medicinal Plant. It’s called the Arabian as an “Al Khassu - الخس”. It has so more health benefits in the medical science. It is being named as a “lactuca” by anyone of Greek or Romanian.

This herbal plant most commonly produced as a leaf vegetable, but sometimes it grown from its stalk and seeds. For the first time in the world Lettuce was cultivated by an ancient Egyptian, and then it extend to the Greeks, Romans and all over the world. Some one classified it by these names - green leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, butterhead lettuce and iceberg lettuce. All kinds of lettuce have so more health benefits and nutrition facts.

How Many Colors of Lettuce?

Although there are five types of lettuce, but they have not five deference colors. They have only two colors such as green colored lettuce and red colored lettuce. Red lettuce is very rare. It is not available in our locality. But green lettuce is available in our locality around the whole world. These four most common lettuce such as green leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, butterhead lettuce and iceberg lettuce are in the green color.

How to Use Lettuce?

Green Leaf and Red Leaf Lettuce is mainly eaten for salads. Otherwise, it is also eaten in various types of food, such as sandwiches, soups and wraps. It may also be eaten as a cooked leaf, grilled leaf, sauteed and braised leaf in the various types of recipes. But the raw leaf is the most beneficial for health. The Chinese have eaten Woju yey (莴苣叶) both raw leaf and cooked leaf.

Lettuce is a high-quality medicinal source. There are available vitamin-A, vitamin-K, potassium, as well as some dietary fiber, carbohydrates, protein, and a small amount of fat.
